Marine Corps Symphonic Marching Band
The history of the Marine Corps Symphonic Marching Band began with the first Navy Music Band, officially established in 1872, rooted in the tradition of martial music. In 1965, it was renamed the Marine Corps Concert Band, and in 1974, during a concert celebrating the 166th anniversary of the Marine Corps at the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro, it received its current name: Marine Corps Symphonic Band (CFN). Today, the Symphonic Band maintains a vast repertoire encompassing a wide range of musical genres, spanning from classical to popular music.
Currently, the band is composed of approximately 100 members, all Marine Corps personnel—men and women—who are professional musicians selected through competitive examinations. They serve in the Bands Company of the Naval Battalion, headquartered at the historic Fortaleza de São José da Ilha das Cobras, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, built in 1736. The ensemble features a wide variety of percussion, wind, string, and reed instruments, making the Symphonic Band a unique group capable of performing everything from classical works to popular classics, with arrangements of exceptional quality and a high level of musical complexity. The band is often accompanied by a choir of around 25 additional musicians and highly qualified solo vocalists with distinctive vocal timbres, bringing the total to more than 120 performers.
Among its international appearances, noteworthy highlights include a symphonic concert for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, England, in 1952; a band competition in Hamburg, Germany, in 1974; the 5th International Festival of Military Bands in Modena, Italy, in 1996; the 1st International Festival of Culture of the Triple Frontier in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, in 2004; the Year of Brazil in France in 2005; and the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Israel’s independence in 2008.
In Brazil, the band performs extensively in numerous state capitals across the country. Annually, since 1974, in celebration of the Marine Corps’ anniversary, the Symphonic Band presents a gala concert at the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro. In this way, high-quality music is positively disseminated, reaching diverse sectors of society, promoting access to culture, and enhancing the reputation of the Brazilian Navy.
