The Nation’s Musical Heart

The Banda Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia (BSNC) stands as one of the country’s most significant cultural pillars, serving as the musical voice of the territories and a symbol of Colombian identity. Under the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Knowledge, the institution was established to decentralize artistic excellence, bringing the symphonic winds and percussion format to regions historically removed from major cultural circuits.

In a historic milestone, the BSNC established the city of Tunja, in the department of Boyacá, as its new official headquarters in February 2026. This move to the “Cradle of Liberty” reflects the band’s mission to circulate throughout the country as a cultural right, strengthening pedagogical and musical processes for young instrumentalists nationwide. Led by General Director Maestro Germán Hernández Castro and Principal Conductor Maestro Christiam Camilo Malagón Tenza, the ensemble envisions a season focused on sonic diversity and the construction of peace through art.

Composed of high-level professional musicians, the National Symphonic Band distinguishes itself from traditional orchestras through its robust formation of wind and percussion instruments, granting it a unique and versatile sound. Its repertoire spans from universal classical music to the celebration of Colombia’s rich rhythmic traditions—such as porro, bambuco, and cumbia—integrated into sophisticated symphonic arrangements.

More than just an artistic body, the BSNC is a national project that aims, note by note, to connect Colombians with their roots and project the country’s talent to the world. Through free concerts, workshops, and national tours, the band continues to honor its motto as “the soul of Colombia,” transforming realities and celebrating the cultural heritage of every corner of the country.
