The Marine Corps Martial Band (CFN) began in 1808, with the arrival of the Portuguese Royal Family in Rio de Janeiro, bringing with them the Band of the Royal Naval Brigade, composed of 60 musicians. This formation remained until 1946, when its personnel increased to 128 military musicians. In 1968, the ensemble expanded to 170 members, becoming the largest military marching band and also the largest bagpipe band in the world. Today, the CFN Bands perform in both Martial and Symphonic formats.

To join the CFN Band, musicians enter the Brazilian Navy through a public competitive examination. The preparatory course lasts 11 months and is divided into two stages: the first consists of military training leading to qualification as a Marine Corps Music Sergeant, and the second focuses on advanced musical training directed toward the activities of a military band.
