University of Michigan Chamber Winds (USA)
Under the direction of Courtney Snyder, Associate Director of Bands, the University of Michigan Chamber Winds are composed of smaller ensembles formed from musicians within the university’s Concert Band. These ensembles perform a diverse range of repertoire, including both standard and contemporary works for woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. This approach provides students with a valuable opportunity to refine their communication and collaborative skills in smaller groups before returning to the full Concert Band. Dr. Snyder’s role at the university extends beyond the Chamber Winds; she is also an Associate Professor of Conducting, conducts the Concert Band, and directs the Michigan Youth Symphonic Band. Her work has been recognized with honors such as the Tau Beta Sigma Paula Crider Outstanding Band Director Award and second place in The American Prize in Conducting. A free concert featuring the University of Michigan Chamber Winds, conducted by Dr. Snyder and graduate students, is scheduled for October 17, 2025. The program is set to include pieces by Tielman Susato, Jess Turner, Mary Denney, and Reynaldo Hahn and will take place in the Earl V. Moore Building. The use of smaller ensembles is a key aspect of the program, offering students unique chances for musical growth.
