The University of New Mexico (UNM) Wind Symphony is a nationally recognized, high-level wind orchestra, comprising the most talented wind, brass, and percussion students in the UNM Department of Music. The ensemble’s primary purpose is to prepare musicians for professional careers through the performance of high-quality repertoire. Under the direction of Dr. Emily Moss, the group has performed at prestigious national and regional conferences and has released six commercial recordings, some featuring renowned soloists. The ensemble’s commitment to wind band literature is demonstrated through its participation in commissioning over 50 new works for the genre. Recent performances include a Chamber Winds concert in October 2025 and an “Homage to Bach” concert in November 2025. The UNM Wind Symphony also regularly features UNM faculty members on its recordings and in its concerts. The group’s albums, including Fascinating Ribbonsand Classic Solos for Winds, are available through various distributors.

Emily Moss
Conductor
Dr. Emily Moss is a Professor of Music and the Director of Bands at the University of New Mexico (UNM). In her role, which she began in the fall of 2023, she conducts the UNM Wind Symphony. Here is a brief biographical text about her: Dr. Emily Moss joined the University of New Mexico (UNM) as Director of Bands and Professor of Music in the fall of 2023. She is the conductor of the UNM Wind Symphony and is also responsible for overseeing the graduate wind conducting program. Prior to her appointment at UNM, Dr. Moss served as the Director of Bands and Instrumental Area Coordinator at California State University, Los Angeles, from 2011 to 2023. She has also held positions at Brooklyn College (City University of New York) and the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Moss holds a Doctor of Arts in Music Education, with a minor in bassoon performance, and a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado. She also earned Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degrees from the University of Washington. Before her career in higher education, she taught at the middle school level in Washington and Arizona. In addition to her university duties, she maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor and clinician, working with ensembles across the United States.
