Al-Farabi
Al-Farabi is a unique establishment in Rio de Janeiro’s Centro district, seamlessly blending a second-hand bookstore (sebo) with a bar and restaurant. Originally opened in 2004, it became a beloved spot for intellectuals and artists. After closing in 2017, Al-Farabi reopened in June 2023 at its new location on Rua do Mercado, 34.
The venue offers an extensive collection of used books, particularly in literature and humanities, creating a cozy atmosphere with wooden furnishings and bookshelves. The menu features Brazilian culinary classics, including the popular picadinho carioca (diced beef with rice, poached egg, farofa, and fried banana), as well as feijoada and bobó de camarão served on select days.
Al-Farabi also hosts a vibrant cultural program with weekly samba sessions, literary events curated by historian Luiz Antonio Simas, art exhibitions, and gastronomic gatherings, reinforcing its role as a cultural hub in Rio de Janeiro.
